Avon Downs ...

After leaving Barkly Homestead and heading towards Queensland we stopped for a break. Stopping at Avon Downs in Ranken. This 24 hours rest stop is 56 km before the NT/QLD border.

History ...

This is a basic stop on the main highway opposite a police station, with some interesting history. The longest sheep droving trip in Australian history ended here. Starting in Rich Avon, Victoria with 11,000 sheep and ending with 4,000 sheep 16 months later at Avon Downs, Northern Territory. There has also been a police presence since the early 1900 due to horse thieves and cattle duffers back in the day.

The Rest Area ...

The area is bitumen and gravel and has a few trees. You can use the two undercover seating areas as well as the bbq's/fire pit.

A toilet is here as are bins if you need a place to discard your rubbish. There is also a water tank but the water may not be suitable for drinking.
