Carnarvon & Capricorn Holiday Park – WA

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites

Carnarvon has many caravan parks. A good thing as a huge amount of travellers pass through. And I do mean a huge amount.

After having a look online and on WikiCamps, we found Capricorn Holiday Park had the best price.

As we were camping not to far away at Wooramel Station, we decided to take a drive and check it out.

Reception

Capricorn Holiday Park

Driving in to Capricorn Holiday Park, we stopped at reception, before having a look around.

I noticed a coffee machine and jewellery you can buy as I walked in. Jodie, one of the owners was friendly and welcoming. Happy for us to check out her park.

Heading to reception, you’ll pass well maintained gardens and a stand with fresh local produce you can perches.

After driving around and seeing the large fire-pit, swimming pool, bowling green and the pizza oven I was hooked.

Everything in this park is clean and well maintained. They have great pride in the park and in keeping there guests happy.

Almost every day or night they seem to have activities. Whether it is a simple camp fire and happy hour drinks, pizza night, bingo, bowls, music or a 70’s night.

The amenities are spotless as is the laundry. Outside of which you will find the dump point.

The large camp kitchen has all you need including a TV. They often have free left over veg for anyone to take.

Outside there is a pizza oven and electric BBQ. In prime position next to the fire-pit.

In addition to a large shed, housing a bar, games and a little stage is next to the bowling green.

All over the park are rustic pieces of charm. It’s these extra small things that make this park so lovely.

Carnarvon Shops

Carnarvon has some basic shops such as Woolworths and a bottle shop. You can park your caravan on the opposite corner while you shop.

Also, dedicated parking spot is here for caravans 😀 An IGA is down the road with a bakery next to it.

We checked out the two pubs. Carnarvon Hotel is opposite the water. serving tasty meals and has friendly staff. Compared to the other on the main street which we had good coffee.

If you’re in need of something for caravan or camping then Tropic Hardware and Mitre 10 might be the go. Plus Auto One and Repco are here.

Carnarvon Day Trips

We had to be in Carnarvon for some appointments. As we had time on our hands we checked out some of the local attractions.

  • Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum
  1. The facility was officially opened in 2012 by Buzz Aldrin.
  2. You can see the OTC dish from almost anywhere in Carnarvon.
  3. The facility was instrumental in the first landing on the moon and Australia’s first TV satellite broadcast.
  4. Watch the original footage which is shown in a small movie theatre.

As you walk in, the friendly faces of the volunteers greet you. Volunteers are also usually full time travellers.

Entry is $10 each which is a good price for what you see. You can go inside the Apollo 11 space capsule, have a lay down and listen to the count down.

Many people want to have a go so you are given a buzzer which goes off when it’s your turn.

When It was our turn, we put on our unflattering astronaut outfits. Looking like something from Lost in Space.

We lay down in the Apollo 11 ready for take off. You hear the actual sound countdown and footage from the mission. No shaking or G-force going on though.

Free tea and coffee are available in a little coffee shop type area.

A few things children can have a go on are also here. We had a play with the skill tester buzzy thingy 😉 I failed miserably.

Besides seeing lots of the old tecnology and equipment, memorabilia is around the place.

Larry put his hands in the hand mould Buzz Aldren made. I mean, “Buzz Aldren” had actually touched this 😀

  • River Gums Cafe

This Cafe is on a plantation and is in a lush colourful garden.

The cafe is a shed renovated in to a kitchen.

Tables and chairs are scattered through out the garden as well as old gas station pumps, toilets, wash boards etc. They have many fun points of interest in this tranquil setting.

Unfortunately no coffee machine here 🙁 but they have coffee plungers and make your own coffee. Boil the kettle etc. You can then help yourself to free refills.

A great little place off the beaten track.

  • The Big Humpty Dumpty

Apparently not the proper Big Humpty. As it was on our drive we popped by and had look. It’s not much to look at but it’s quirky. It’s also near a Bumbaks Preserves & Ice Cream 😉

  • The Heritage Precinct

One Mile Jetty was built in the early 1900s and is 1,493 metres long.

For a small donation you can either walk it or catch the quaint Coffee Pot train. Lots of people go fish in the deep water at the end of the jetty.

The cafe is a nice place to sit and look over the Jetty and the ocean. This also has an area with history and memorabilia.

The railway and shearers hall of fame was also an interesting place to look around

  • Plantations

Many of Carnarvon plantations sell their products on site.

We visited Gascoyne Organic Farm, it advertised chocolate coated bananas.

After driving up to a large shed, we were shown in to the large walk in fridge. This is where we were left to pick what we wanted.

We chose some veg as well as the chocolate coated banana, which turned out to be very tasty!

  • Quobba Blowhole

75km north of Carnarvon but worth a visit. The blow holes can blow water up to 20ft into the air.

Not far away is a beach were you can snorkel and look at the coral.

A camp site is in this area and worth checking out. We made a short video for You Tube which is at the end of the post.

  • Bibbawarra Bore & Longest Sheep Trough In The Southern Hemisphere

You may not think Bibbawarra bore is worth a visit as it is down a bit of a bumpy dirt road. I did find it interesting though. The Bore has a pipe running steaming hot water out onto the ground.

A black and white photo of Bibbawarra bore hangs in the coffee shop at One Mile Jetty. Taken back when ladies wore petty coats and gentleman wore cloth caps.

At 180 meters long the Sheep trough is next to the bore. Built back in 1940. It was made this long so by the time it reached the cattle it would cool down.

  • Rock Pools

An area with a lovely little beach and water to have a swim. We ate our lunch in the car. A great spot for a picnic if not for the flies.

To Conclude

If you are stopping in Carnarvon I recommend Capricorn Holiday Park. The park and the owners are top notch.

The park is also in the best spot as far as we are concerned. They can even fit you in if you are towing over 27ft.

It’s always worth asking if they have any deals on if you are planing a stay in the area.
